Team Nigeria Wins Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China

Nigeria has recorded a landmark achievement in global education after Team Nigeria won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China. According to Punch and Vanguard, the victory marks the country’s first-ever appearance at the global competition, where its young representatives outperformed contestants from Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe to claim the top honour.

The four-member Nigerian team comprised Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba. The students qualified for the World Cup after progressing through the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where Oluwadamilola emerged as the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion. Ar-Raheem International College also confirmed that Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf were among the medal winners at the international event.

The achievement represents a major milestone for Nigeria’s academic community and highlights the growing impact of spelling and literacy competitions in nurturing young talent. Organisers described the victory as a reflection of the students’ dedication, resilience, and academic excellence, noting that the team’s performance has elevated Nigeria’s profile on the global education stage while showcasing the country’s investment in youth development.

For Nigeria, the triumph reinforces the country’s growing reputation in international academic competitions and underscores the importance of sustained investment in education and talent development. Analysts say the historic victory is expected to inspire greater participation in literacy programmes across the country while strengthening Nigeria’s standing as a producer of globally competitive young scholars capable of excelling on the world stage.
