Mo Abudu: The Storyteller-in-Chief of Africa

If the 21st century belongs to those who shape culture, then Mosunmola Abudu, known across the world as Mo Abudu, has already claimed her crown.

A media mogul, producer, philanthropist, and unapologetic dreamer, Mo Abudu is not merely broadcasting African stories, she’s globalizing them with elegance, authority, and intention.

From her earliest professional days in human resources at ExxonMobil, Mo has never been one to follow conventional scripts. She redefined corporate HR in Nigeria with her firm, Vic Lawrence & Associates, only to pivot again, this time into the then-fractured space of African media.

It was a bold move at 40, launching Moments with Mo, the first daily talk show syndicated across 48 African countries. But bold is what she does best.

In 2013, Mo took another defining leap with the launch of EbonyLife TV, the continent’s first global black entertainment and lifestyle network. At a time when much of African storytelling was either underrepresented or stereotyped on global platforms, Mo carved out a fresh lane, one where African narratives were luxurious, layered, and unapologetically authentic.

Within its first year, EbonyLife soared into DSTV’s top 25% of viewed channels, a signal that the world was more than ready to watch Africa tell its own story.

Today, the EbonyLife Group is a multi-armed media empire, encompassing film and TV production, a luxury entertainment resort (EbonyLife Place), a creative academy, and major content deals with global streaming giants like Netflix, Sony, and AMC Networks

Her productions; The Wedding Party, Chief Daddy, Òlòtūré, Blood Sisters, and Elesin Oba, have not only captivated Nigerian audiences but have reached global top charts and film festivals, breaking viewership records along the way.

But Mo’s success isn’t just about entertainment, it’s about intention. Her vision has always been clear: to own the narrative, elevate the image, and empower the continent

Through partnerships with Netflix and West African universities, and the establishment of the EbonyLife Creative Academy in Lagos, she is planting the seeds of a new African cinema movement, one where the next generation isn’t just talented, but trained, equipped, and globally competitive.

Her impact has not gone unnoticed. Mo Abudu became the first African woman to chair the International Emmy Awards Gala, was listed in The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 Most Powerful Women in Global TV, and received the MIPTV Médailles d’Honneur in Cannes. Most recently, she was named Forbes Africa Business Woman of the Year (2024), a title earned through vision, perseverance, and proof of concept.

Beyond her business accolades, Mo is an advocate for women’s voices, youth empowerment, and community development. Her Inspire Africa Foundation and Sisters Hub initiatives mentor and fund female filmmakers and entrepreneurs across the continent.

In every room she enters, whether in Lagos, London, or Los Angeles, she carries with her not just her brand, but the weight and brilliance of African potential.

In a world oversaturated with content, Mo Abudu reminds us that it’s the authentic stories; the bold, beautifully told, and intentionally crafted ones, that truly stand the test of time. She is not just changing the game. She is rewriting the playbook.
