Genevieve Nnaji makes screen return in BBC Studios thriller “Wahala”

Genevieve Nnaji is set to return to the screen in Wahala, a new television thriller produced by BBC Studios, marking one of the actress’s most significant international projects in recent years. The series was announced as part of BBC Studios’ expanding investment in African storytelling and globally positioned productions, according to Punch and BBC Africa.

Wahala is described as a suspense-driven drama exploring power, secrets, and survival within interconnected African and international settings. Producers say the project aims to blend high-end global production standards with authentic African narratives, reflecting growing international demand for stories originating from the continent.

Nnaji, widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, gained global acclaim following the success of her directorial debut Lionheart, which became the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix as an original title. Her return has generated significant excitement among fans and industry observers who view her as a key figure in Nollywood’s international expansion.

Analysts say the project highlights the increasing interest from global studios in African talent and content as streaming platforms and broadcasters compete for diverse international audiences. The collaboration between BBC Studios and leading African creatives is also seen as part of a broader shift positioning African film and television more prominently within the global entertainment industry.
