Somalia Launches First Offshore Oil Mission with Turkish Backing

Somalia has embarked on its first-ever offshore oil exploration mission, marking a historic milestone in the country’s energy sector, with strong backing from the Turkey government.

The mission involves a seismic survey campaign covering roughly 15,000 square kilometres of offshore territory, aimed at assessing hydrocarbon potential and attracting future investment, as reported by Business Insider Africa.

Turkey is playing a central role through its state-backed energy and survey capabilities, providing both technical expertise and operational support, as part of a broader cooperation agreement between the two countries focused on energy and infrastructure development.

Officials say the initiative represents a major step toward unlocking Somalia’s untapped oil and gas reserves, which have remained largely unexplored due to decades of instability and limited investment.
