Singapore Deepens Egypt Investment Push as Bilateral Trade Ties Gain Momentum

Singapore is stepping up efforts to deepen investment and trade relations with Egypt, as the Asian financial hub looks to expand its presence in one of Africa’s most strategically important markets, as reported by Egyptian Gazette and Ahram Online. Recent discussions between Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones and Enterprise Singapore have focused on attracting more Singaporean capital into logistics, renewable energy and information technology, while encouraging partnerships between businesses from both countries.

The push builds on a broader diplomatic and economic rapprochement. During Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s 2025 state visit to Egypt, both governments signed agreements covering areas including the economy, maritime transport, healthcare, agriculture, startups and SME development. The two sides also agreed to study the feasibility of a bilateral free trade agreement, signalling ambitions to move beyond traditional investment into a deeper trade framework.

Singaporean companies already have a foothold in Egypt. Egyptian investment authorities said in June that 149 Singaporean companies were operating in the country with combined investments of about $562.2 million, concentrated in agriculture, food manufacturing, logistics and digital transformation. Singapore has also identified Egypt as part of its strategy to help domestic companies access fast growing markets across Africa and the Middle East.

For Egypt, the relationship offers access to Singaporean capital, technology and expertise in logistics, ports, digital infrastructure and renewable energy. For Singapore, Egypt provides a strategic gateway into African and Middle Eastern markets, with its location, large consumer base and expanding investment opportunities making it an increasingly important partner. The next phase could see the relationship move from diplomatic cooperation toward larger commercial projects and a more structured investment corridor between Southeast Asia and Africa.
