UAE Urges Ceasefire and Civilian-Led Transition in Sudan

The United Arab Emirates has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and pressed for a swift return to civilian rule amid the country’s worsening humanitarian crisis. The appeal was made by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, during the NEXT Gulf Summit in Abu Dhabi, where he emphasized the need for peace and political stability in the conflict-torn nation, as reported by Reuters.

Gargash said the UAE is ready to increase its humanitarian assistance once security conditions permit, reiterating that “the future of Sudan must be guided by the will of its people through a civilian-led process.” He noted that sustainable peace requires an inclusive political framework and regional cooperation, as highlighted by Khaleej Times.

The Sudanese conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left millions displaced and strained regional stability. While the UAE has positioned itself as a mediator and humanitarian partner, analysts note ongoing concerns over accusations that the Gulf nation has supported the RSF, allegations the UAE has denied, as stated in Reuters coverage.

Regional observers believe the UAE’s call may signal renewed international efforts to push Sudan toward a negotiated settlement. However, progress remains uncertain as both warring factions continue to resist international mediation efforts, prolonging a crisis that has crippled Sudan’s economy and deepened human suffering.
