Turkey is expanding its strategic and economic footprint across Africa, focusing on energy exploration and aerospace initiatives, according to reporting by Bloomberg.
Central to Turkey’s push is oil and gas development, highlighted by the deployment of the deep‑water drillship Cagri Bey from the port of Mersin to Somali waters. The vessel will conduct exploratory drilling under a production-sharing agreement with Somalia, following years of seismic surveying that indicate significant offshore hydrocarbon potential, as reported by FTL Somalia.
Beyond energy, Turkey is pursuing aerospace and spaceport opportunities in Africa. Discussions have focused on establishing facilities in equatorial regions like Somalia, which offer technical advantages for rocket launches and long-range aerospace testing. These plans would complement Turkey’s domestic space ambitions while strengthening its scientific and industrial presence on the continent.
The initiative forms part of Ankara’s broader Africa strategy, which includes expanding trade, infrastructure investment, and defence cooperation. Officials suggest that energy and aerospace engagement will serve as entry points for deeper commercial and technological partnerships, helping Turkey solidify its influence in a rapidly growing and strategically important region.
