Stellantis Expands Vehicle Lineup for Planned South Africa Manufacturing Plant

Global automaker Stellantis has announced plans to broaden the vehicle range for its upcoming manufacturing plant in Gqeberha, South Africa, moving beyond its initial focus on the Peugeot Landtrek pickup. The decision reflects changing market dynamics in Africa’s auto industry, with demand shifting toward smaller, more affordable vehicles. Stellantis South Africa Managing Director Mike Whitfield said the company’s new approach aims to strengthen its regional competitiveness and long-term viability, as reported by Reuters.

The facility, designed as a completely knocked down (CKD) assembly plant, will source components locally and internationally, serving both the domestic and wider African markets. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2027, with the expanded model lineup expected to enhance economies of scale and create stronger supply chain linkages across the continent, according to the company’s statement.

Whitfield noted that improving road infrastructure and rising competition from Asian automakers have reshaped market realities. “The market has changed so dramatically since our initial plans. We believe that just having a pure pickup plant is not as viable,” he said, underscoring Stellantis’ commitment to building vehicles that better reflect consumer demand in emerging markets.

Industry analysts believe the diversification could position Stellantis more strategically within Africa’s growing automotive ecosystem. However, they caution that success will depend on maintaining high local content standards, managing cost pressures, and aligning production capacity with fluctuating regional demand, as highlighted by Automotive News Africa.
