Somalia Negotiates $900 Million Deal With Pakistan for 24 JF-17 Fighter Jets

Somalia is in advanced negotiations with Pakistan to acquire up to 24 JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets in a defence package reportedly valued at about $900 million, according to regional media reports including Daily Times.

The discussions gained momentum following a February 2026 visit to Islamabad by the commander of the Somali Air Force, reflecting Mogadishu’s efforts to rebuild its fixed-wing combat capability after decades without a functional air force. Officials have framed the potential acquisition as part of broader efforts to strengthen sovereign control over Somalia’s airspace and coastline.

The proposed deal centres on the JF-17 Thunder Block III variant, jointly developed by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. Reports indicate the package would include pilot and maintenance training, weapons systems integration, spare parts, and logistical support, underscoring a comprehensive capability-building plan rather than a simple aircraft purchase.

If finalized, the agreement would mark Somalia’s largest defence procurement in decades and signal a significant shift in its military modernization strategy amid ongoing counterinsurgency and national security efforts.
