The Seychelles has retained its position as Africa’s most powerful passport, offering its citizens the highest level of travel freedom on the continent. According to the Henley Passport Index, the Seychellois passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to about 156 destinations worldwide, placing the island nation among the most globally mobile passports and the clear leader in Africa, according to The Nation News.
The ranking, compiled using global travel data from the International Air Transport Association, measures passport strength based on how many destinations holders can enter without obtaining a visa beforehand. Seychelles currently ranks around 25th globally, reflecting its strong diplomatic relationships and international agreements that allow broad access to destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Other African countries following Seychelles in the continental rankings include Mauritius, whose passport provides access to about 151 destinations, and South Africa, which allows visa-free travel to more than 100 countries. Analysts say the strength of these passports reflects a combination of diplomatic engagement, economic stability, and international cooperation.
Tribune Online notes that passport rankings are widely viewed as a measure of global mobility and diplomatic influence, enabling easier movement for tourism, business travel, and international engagement. Within Africa, Seychelles continues to lead the continent, reinforcing its position as the region’s benchmark for travel access and international connectivity.
