Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89 After More Than 35 Years on the Throne

King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, bringing an end to more than three decades as the country’s monarch, according to BBC and NBC News. The Royal Palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, August 28, after being hospitalised earlier this month.

Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, and was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death. Although Norway’s monarch has largely ceremonial responsibilities, Harald became widely respected for modernising the royal institution and presenting a more open, inclusive image of the monarchy.

His life was shaped by extraordinary experiences. As a child, Harald fled Norway with his family following the 1940 Nazi invasion, spending part of the Second World War in the United States. He later became an accomplished sailor, representing Norway at three Olympic Games. His 1968 marriage to Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, also challenged traditional royal expectations and eventually became one of the country’s most celebrated royal love stories.

Harald was particularly praised for his response to national tragedies and his advocacy for diversity, religious tolerance and inclusion. Following the 2011 terrorist attacks, his emotional public addresses helped provide a sense of unity and reassurance to Norwegians. He remained committed to the throne despite recurring health problems and rejected calls to abdicate, saying his oath to serve Norway was for life.

His death immediately triggers a change of monarch, with his 53 year old son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeding him as Norway’s king. The transition comes at a challenging moment for the Norwegian royal family, but Harald leaves behind a legacy as a popular and reform minded monarch who helped make the institution more relatable to modern Norway.
