Nigeria Fashion Week Gains Federal Backing as Government Targets Creative Economy Growth

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria Fashion Week 2026, strengthening efforts to position fashion as a driver of investment, entrepreneurship and economic growth within Nigeria’s creative economy, as reported by The Guardian Nigeria and ThisdayLive. Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy Hannatu Musa Musawa gave the assurance during a meeting with a delegation from Legendary Gold Limited, organisers of the event, alongside representatives of Qualitrend Group, its strategic partnerships, government relations, tourism and investment integration partner.

The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place in Abuja from October 2 to 4, bringing together designers, manufacturers, buyers, investors, policymakers and other creative industry stakeholders. The organisers said the event will focus on fashion’s links to manufacturing, tourism, exports and investment, while its theme, “Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green and Blue Economy,” will place emphasis on sustainability and the wider economic potential of the sector.

The government’s backing is significant for an industry increasingly viewed as an economic platform rather than solely a cultural or entertainment activity. Stronger links between fashion businesses and investors, manufacturers, retailers and international markets could support job creation, export development and foreign exchange earnings while increasing demand for locally produced textiles, garments and other creative products. The planned collaboration also reflects the administration’s broader push to expand the contribution of Nigeria’s creative industries to national economic growth.

Looking ahead, the success of Nigeria Fashion Week will depend on its ability to convert industry participation into commercial opportunities, including investment, manufacturing partnerships and export access. With federal and private sector stakeholders working together, the 2026 edition could strengthen Abuja’s role as a destination for fashion and creative economy investment while giving Nigerian brands greater exposure to regional and international markets.
