Namibia’s Health Ministry Declares Mpox Outbreak in Swakopmund

Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services has declared an outbreak of mpox in the coastal city of Swakopmund after confirming the country’s first case of the viral disease. The ministry said surveillance teams and rapid response units have been activated to trace contacts and contain any potential spread, as reported by Reuters.

The patient, who recently traveled within the Southern African Development Community region, is receiving treatment in isolation at the Swakopmund District Hospital and is in stable condition. Under national health protocol, a single confirmed case of mpox is sufficient to trigger an official outbreak declaration, the ministry explained in a statement cited by The Namibian.

Health officials urged the public to remain calm and adhere to preventive measures, emphasizing that Namibia’s health system is adequately prepared. “We have activated all necessary response mechanisms, including contact tracing and isolation facilities, to ensure public safety,” said Health Ministry spokesperson Walter Kamanya.

Regional health analysts note that the incident underscores the continued threat of emerging infectious diseases in southern Africa, particularly in areas with high cross-border movement. The government’s swift response, Channel Africa reported, reflects lessons learned from previous outbreaks and ongoing efforts to strengthen national disease surveillance.
