Libya Brings Major Oil Field Back Online With Support from French Energy Giant

Libya, North Africa’s oil powerhouse, has restarted production at the Mabruk oil field, a key onshore asset that had been offline since 2015, with technical and operational support from French energy major TotalEnergies, according to Business Insider Africa.

The field was brought back online in February 2026 with upgraded facilities capable of producing around 25,000 barrels per day. The revival follows a multi-year project launched in 2024 aimed at restoring Libya’s oil production capacity and revitalising export revenues after years of disruption due to political instability and conflict.

Officials say the resumption of operations will strengthen Libya’s position as one of North Africa’s leading oil producers, boosting fiscal revenues and supporting broader economic recovery amid growing global energy demand. TotalEnergies’ involvement underscores sustained international interest in partnerships for energy infrastructure development in resource-rich African nations.
