Guinea’s Doumbouya Cleared to Run for President

Guinea’s military leader Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya has been officially cleared to run in the country’s upcoming presidential election, marking a major political turning point three years after he seized power in a coup.

The Constitutional Court of Guinea announced its decision on Thursday, ruling that there were no legal barriers preventing Doumbouya from contesting the presidency under the country’s new constitution. The election, scheduled for February 2026, will be the first since the 2021 military takeover that ousted former President Alpha Condé.

Doumbouya, who has served as interim head of state since the coup, has repeatedly stated that he would only run if it served “the will of the people.” In a statement following the court’s decision, he said, “This is a moment for unity and renewal. Guinea deserves stability and leadership rooted in accountability.”

According to Reuters and Jeune Afrique, political analysts say Doumbouya’s candidacy could reshape Guinea’s democratic transition and test regional responses to military-led governments in West Africa. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has yet to comment on the ruling, but the bloc has previously urged Guinea to return to civilian rule “within a reasonable timeframe.”
