The Game of Thrones franchise is heading to the big screen for the first time, with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest officially scheduled to arrive in cinemas in June 2029, according to Variety. Warner Bros. has set the theatrical release for June 1, 2029, with Owen Harris, who directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, attached to direct and Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards and a writer on Andor, handling the screenplay. The project will mark the first feature film set in George R.R. Martin’s Westeros universe, expanding one of television’s most commercially successful fantasy franchises into cinema.
The film will centre on Aegon I Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror, whose campaign to conquer and unite most of Westeros took place roughly 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. Riding the dragon Balerion the Black Dread alongside his sister wives Visenya and Rhaenys, Aegon established the Targaryen dynasty and became the first ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. His conquest is chronicled in Martin’s Fire & Blood, which has already provided the historical foundation for House of the Dragon. Casting for Aegon and other major characters has not yet been announced, leaving the lead role among the film’s major unanswered questions.
The theatrical expansion comes as HBO continues to develop its wider Westeros slate. House of the Dragon is moving towards its fourth and final season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season. For Warner Bros., Aegon’s Conquest represents an opportunity to extend the commercial life of the Game of Thrones property beyond television and into the global cinema market, while giving audiences access to a major chapter of Westerosi history that has never been portrayed in live action. With dragons, large scale battles and the creation of the Iron Throne central to Aegon’s story, the film is being positioned as the franchise’s first major cinematic event.
