Ethiopian Airlines Orders Nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners to Power Long-Haul Expansion

Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft as Africa’s largest carrier steps up its long-haul growth strategy, strengthening its position on intercontinental routes. The deal, announced in January 2026, underscores the airline’s confidence in sustained global travel demand and its ambition to expand connectivity between Africa and major markets in Europe, North America and Asia, as reported by Reuters.

The new aircraft are Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which will add to Ethiopian Airlines’ already extensive wide-body fleet, the largest Dreamliner fleet on the continent. Boeing said the fuel-efficient jets will enable the airline to improve operating economics while supporting network expansion and higher frequencies on long-distance routes, according to a statement from the US aircraft manufacturer.

Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew said the order reflects the carrier’s long-term growth vision and its focus on modern, environmentally efficient aircraft that enhance passenger comfort and operational performance. He noted that the Dreamliners would play a key role in supporting the airline’s strategy of positioning Addis Ababa as a leading global aviation hub, as cited by Africanbusiness.

Aviation analysts say the investment reinforces Ethiopian Airlines’ status as one of the most aggressive fleet expanders among emerging-market carriers. Industry commentary reported by Business Insider Africa notes that the order, alongside recent narrow-body acquisitions, is expected to give the airline greater flexibility to launch new long-haul routes and deepen its competitive edge as global air travel continues to recover.
