Dr Jean Kaseya Leading Africa’s Health Security Transformation Through Strategic Public Health Leadership

Jean Kaseya is shaping a new era of continental health leadership as Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Since his appointment in April 2023, he has led efforts to strengthen Africa’s preparedness, response systems, and long-term health security architecture, positioning the institution as a central pillar in the continent’s public health ecosystem.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr Jean Kaseya built his foundation in medicine and public health through rigorous academic training. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kinshasa and a Master’s degree in Public Health from Henri Poincaré University. His academic path laid the groundwork for a career spanning clinical practice, national health systems, and global health institutions, reflecting both technical depth and strategic leadership.

With more than two decades of experience, his professional journey reflects steady progression through some of the world’s most influential health organizations. He began within the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of Congo before moving to global initiatives, including serving as Technical Coordinator for the World Health Organization Meningitis Vaccine Project in Geneva. He later joined Gavi the Vaccine Alliance as Senior Director of Programs, contributing to vaccine access and immunization strategies across Africa.

His impact expanded further during his tenure with UNICEF, where he spent nearly a decade in senior leadership roles across Côte d’Ivoire, Congo Brazzaville, and Namibia. In these roles, he focused on child health, system strengthening, and emergency response programs. Prior to leading Africa CDC, he served as Country Director for the Democratic Republic of Congo and Head of the African Health Diagnostics Platform at Clinton Health Access Initiative, where he drove initiatives to improve diagnostic capacity and healthcare delivery systems across the continent.

Since assuming leadership at Africa CDC, Dr Jean Kaseya has overseen a period of institutional expansion and operational strengthening. Under his leadership, the organization has scaled its programs, increased coordination across member states, and strengthened surveillance and emergency response systems. A defining moment of his tenure was the declaration of the mpox outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security, a move that mobilized coordinated action across African countries and global partners.

His contributions have been recognized at the continental level, including honors from the African Union acknowledging his role in advancing public health systems and strengthening Africa’s health security framework. These recognitions reflect both his leadership and the growing importance of coordinated, Africa-led health responses in a changing global landscape.

At the core of Dr Jean Kaseya’s leadership is a vision centered on resilience, coordination, and self-reliance. His work emphasizes sustainable health financing, workforce development, and stronger institutional capacity, positioning Africa to respond effectively to future health challenges while shaping its own public health agenda.

Looking ahead, he continues to focus on building integrated health systems, strengthening continental preparedness, and amplifying Africa’s voice in global health governance. Through strategic leadership and a commitment to long-term impact, Dr Jean Kaseya is redefining the trajectory of public health leadership across Africa.
