Djibouti Launches East Africa’s Largest Ship Repair Yard with $124 Million Investment

Djibouti has officially inaugurated East Africa’s largest ship repair yard, a landmark $124 million maritime infrastructure project aimed at strengthening its position as a regional logistics and shipping hub.

The facility, known as the Djibouti Ship Repair Yard (DSRY), was developed through a partnership with Damen Shipyards Group and financed by Invest International, with total investment valued at approximately €107.5 million ($124 million), as reported by The Maritime Executive.

Strategically located near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, the yard is designed to service vessels transiting between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It features a 217-metre floating dock with a lifting capacity of 20,100 tonnes, enabling it to handle a wide range of repair and maintenance operations .

Analysts say the development marks a significant step in Djibouti’s ambition to capture more value from global shipping traffic, positioning the country as a key maritime service hub in the Red Sea corridor and across East Africa.
