Audi is bringing back its distinctive A2 nameplate as an all electric compact model, nearly two decades after the original A2 left production, as the German automaker seeks to strengthen its position in Europe’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market, Bloomberg reported. The new A2 e tron will serve as Audi’s entry point into premium electric mobility and is scheduled to make its full debut in autumn 2026, with production taking place in Ingolstadt.
The revival draws directly on the original A2’s reputation for lightweight engineering and exceptional efficiency, but reinterprets the concept for the electric era. Audi says the new model features a strongly aerodynamic design and flexible interior packaging, while preliminary figures show energy consumption of 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometres for the 140 kW version fitted with its efficiency package. Its drag coefficient is 0.24, while the model uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology and supports bidirectional charging.
The comeback is strategically important for Audi as it works to make electric mobility more accessible while refreshing its model range. The company has positioned the A2 e tron alongside the larger Q9 as one of its key product launches for 2026, with the compact model designed to attract customers seeking a smaller premium electric vehicle. Audi has also been testing prototypes in extreme cold conditions in Scandinavia and through aerodynamic testing at its development facilities ahead of the launch.
The original A2 was technologically ambitious but commercially unsuccessful, with its unconventional design, premium pricing and efficiency focused engineering failing to attract enough buyers before production ended in 2005. Audi is now betting that the electric transition has created a more receptive market for the concept. With efficiency, compact dimensions and premium positioning at the centre of its proposition, the new A2 e tron gives Audi another route to European customers as the industry shifts toward more affordable and efficient electric vehicles.
