Arunma Oteh Strengthening Global Finance and Advancing African Economic Leadership

Arunma Oteh is a globally respected financial leader and policy strategist who has served as Treasurer of the World Bank and Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria. With a career spanning international finance, capital markets reform, and sovereign debt management, Arunma has played a defining role in strengthening financial institutions across Africa and the world. Her leadership reflects technical excellence, reform driven courage, and a commitment to transparent and inclusive economic systems.

Arunma’s journey began with a strong academic foundation. She earned a First Class degree in Computer Science from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and later obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School. She began her international career at the African Development Bank, where she rose through the ranks to become Vice President for Corporate Services. Her tenure at the AfDB exposed her to high level development finance and institutional governance, shaping her future contributions to capital market reform.

In 2010, Arunma was appointed Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria at a critical time following the global financial crisis and domestic market instability. She led comprehensive reforms to restore investor confidence, strengthen regulatory oversight, and enhance transparency in Nigeria’s capital markets. Her leadership stabilised the market, improved corporate governance standards, and re established credibility within the financial system. In 2015 she was appointed Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank, where she oversaw funding operations, capital market transactions, and asset management for one of the world’s largest multilateral institutions.

Arunma’s impact has earned international recognition. She has been listed among Forbes Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women and has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Harvard Business School. She has also been honoured by the Nigerian government and professional bodies for her contributions to financial reform and public service. Her work at the World Bank positioned her as one of the most senior African women in global finance, influencing capital raising strategies and financial sustainability frameworks at scale.

Looking ahead, Arunma Oteh continues to advocate for strong institutions, responsible finance, and African participation in global capital markets. Her vision emphasises governance, integrity, and sustainable development as the foundation for economic transformation.
