AfDB Approves $316 Million Loan to Morocco for Airport Upgrades Ahead of 2030 FIFA World Cup

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $316 million loan to Morocco to finance upgrades at several key airports, as the country prepares to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. According to Reuters, the funding will enhance airport capacity, improve passenger experience, and strengthen aviation infrastructure in anticipation of increased international traffic.

Morocco’s transport ministry highlighted that the project will modernize existing terminals, expand runways, and introduce advanced air traffic management systems. Officials noted that these improvements aim to support tourism growth and ensure the country meets international standards for hosting major sporting events.

The AfDB stated that the loan aligns with its broader strategy to invest in African transport infrastructure, fostering regional connectivity and economic development. “Investments in strategic infrastructure such as airports are critical to unlocking Morocco’s tourism and trade potential,” the bank said in a statement.
