Ethiopian Airlines Restarts Flights to Tigray Region, Official Says

Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights to Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region after a temporary suspension triggered by renewed security concerns, an airline official said. The restart marks a step toward restoring air connectivity to the region following disruptions earlier this week, Reuters reported.

Flights had been halted to destinations including Mekelle, Tigray’s regional capital, after reports of fresh tensions and instability raised safety concerns for commercial operations. The airline said services were resumed once conditions were deemed safe for passengers and crew, based on comments cited by Reuters.

Tigray has remained fragile since the end of a two-year conflict in late 2022, with sporadic tensions continuing in parts of the region. Air travel is a critical transport link for humanitarian operations, business travel and the movement of essential goods, particularly given the region’s limited road access.

Analysts say the resumption of flights underscores efforts to normalise economic and social activity in northern Ethiopia, even as political and security challenges persist. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has continued to adjust its operations in response to evolving security assessments across the country, MarketScreener said.
