Wendy Luhabe Championing Women’s Economic Empowerment and Leadership in South Africa

Wendy Yvonne Nomathemba Luhabe has emerged as one of South Africa’s most influential business leaders, social entrepreneurs, and advocates for women’s economic inclusion. For over three decades, her work has transformed how women engage with the economy, access capital, and assume leadership roles, making her a trailblazer in corporate South Africa and beyond.

Born in 1957 in Daveyton, Gauteng, Wendy pursued higher education with determination, earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Fort Hare, a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Lesotho, and completing a Management Advancement Program at the University of the Witwatersrand. Wendy began her corporate journey in marketing and later gained international experience with companies including Vanda Cosmetics and BMW. These formative experiences shaped her understanding of business practices and leadership dynamics, inspiring her commitment to empowering emerging talent. In 1991, she founded Bridging the Gap, a consultancy designed to prepare black South African graduates for entry into corporate careers. The firm not only offered training but also supported organisations in integrating previously marginalised talent, demonstrating Wendy’s vision for economic inclusion.

In 1993, Wendy co-founded Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (WIPHOLD), a pioneering private equity initiative that enabled women to invest in the economy and support women-led businesses. She later launched South Africa’s Women’s Private Equity Fund, providing capital and expertise to women entrepreneurs at a critical time in the country’s post-apartheid economic transformation. These ventures positioned Wendy as a leading advocate for women’s financial empowerment and business leadership.

Her impact has been recognised internationally. Wendy was named one of the 50 Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World and a Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum. She served as Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg and was appointed an Honorary Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order for her work with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation. Her board leadership spans major corporations including Richemont, Pepkor, and Libstar, reflecting her influence in governance, strategy, and inclusive leadership.

Wendy Luhabe’s career exemplifies the transformative power of vision, courage, and advocacy. Through her work, countless women have gained the skills, capital, and confidence to lead, innovate, and shape Africa’s economic landscape. Her legacy continues to inspire a generation of leaders committed to inclusion, empowerment, and sustainable growth.
