Rwanda and Qatar Strengthen Ties as $2 Billion Bugesera Airport Project Gains Momentum

Rwanda and Qatar have elevated their bilateral partnership with renewed focus on the $2 billion Bugesera International Airport project, officials said, underscoring the strategic importance of aviation infrastructure in East Africa.

The project, backed by Qatari investors and the Rwandan government, is poised to enhance regional connectivity and boost trade, tourism, and logistics, according to Bloomberg. The airport is expected to handle millions of passengers annually and position Rwanda as a central hub in the continent’s growing aviation sector.

Rwandan Transport Minister Ernest Nsabimana noted that the renewed collaboration with Qatar signals confidence in Rwanda’s economic trajectory and long-term infrastructure strategy, as reported by Reuters. The partnership also includes potential ancillary developments, such as logistics zones and commercial hubs, aimed at maximizing economic benefits from the airport project.
