Ethiopia Confirms Marburg Virus Outbreak Infecting Nine People

Ethiopian health authorities have confirmed that a recent outbreak affecting nine individuals was caused by the Marburg virus, a rare but highly infectious hemorrhagic fever, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The cases were reported in the southern region of the country, prompting heightened surveillance and response measures.

The Ministry of Health stated that contact tracing and isolation protocols are underway to prevent further transmission, as reported by Reuters. Health officials are working closely with WHO experts to deploy rapid diagnostic testing and ensure adequate medical care for those affected.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the severity of Marburg virus outbreaks, noting that early detection and containment are critical to prevent wider spread, according to Al Jazeera.

Ethiopia has activated emergency health measures, including community awareness campaigns, to inform the public about symptoms and encourage immediate reporting, as highlighted by Bloomberg.
