Tapiwa Matsinde Elevating African Craft and Design on the Global Stage

Tapiwa Matsinde has emerged as a transformative force in African design, championing craft, culture, and contemporary artistry on the global stage. As the founder of Atelier 55, she has created a platform that bridges African artisans with international markets, cultural institutions, and design enthusiasts, helping redefine how African creativity is perceived and valued.

Born in the United Kingdom with Zimbabwean heritage, Matsinde grew up navigating multiple cultural contexts, which shaped her appreciation for both tradition and innovation. Her early career in graphic design in Zimbabwe exposed her to the potential of African visual storytelling but also revealed the gap in representation on the global design stage. This led her in 2010 to establish Atelier 55, a digital platform and consultancy designed to elevate African artisan businesses, provide strategic mentorship, and connect creators to galleries, cultural institutions, and international audiences.

Atelier 55 combines curation, strategy, and education. Matsinde provides brand development, business mentoring, and market-entry guidance for artisan entrepreneurs, while also working with galleries, museums, and luxury brands to showcase African design with professionalism and cultural authenticity. She authored Contemporary Design Africa, one of the first major surveys highlighting innovative African designers, and hosts the podcast Behind the Design, bringing listeners into artisan studios to explore the intersection of craft and entrepreneurship.

Her work has been widely recognized. According to Lionesses of Africa, Atelier 55 is an award-winning platform, and Matsinde herself is celebrated as a leading curator and connector in the African creative ecosystem. She has also served as a mentor for the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and contributed to initiatives such as the Homo Faber Guide, underscoring her commitment to nurturing talent and advancing African craft globally.

Matsinde emphasizes that true luxury is defined not by price, but by time, skill, people, and emotional connection. She believes African artisans can achieve global success if supported with strategy, storytelling, and clear brand identity. Her work ensures that African design is not only visible but respected, commercially viable, and sustainably positioned.

Through Atelier 55, Tapiwa Matsinde continues to shape the narrative of African creativity. By blending curation, strategy, and cultural insight, she is enabling artisans to transform their craft into global influence, proving that Africa’s creative economy can thrive without compromising heritage or excellence.
