Nigeria Commissions Africa’s Largest Fibre Optic Cable Factory, Boosting Digital Infrastructure

Nigeria’s digital infrastructure took a major leap forward with the commissioning of Africa’s largest fibre optic cable factory and the continent’s first fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) manufacturing facility, marking a milestone in the country’s technological advancement.

Industry experts say the plant, developed by Coleman Technical Industries Limited (CTIL) in Sagamu, Ogun State, represents a strategic national asset that will accelerate broadband expansion, strengthen connectivity, and position Nigeria as a key hub in Africa’s digital economy.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the facility as “a foundation for Nigeria’s technological sovereignty,” noting that the project will significantly reduce import dependency and create thousands of jobs.

According to BusinessDay and Reuters, the new plant will produce more than 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables annually, supporting both domestic and regional demand. Analysts cited by Bloomberg noted that the investment aligns with the federal government’s target to achieve 70 percent broadband penetration by 2027, under Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan.

The project, financed through local funding and private partnerships, underscores growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s tech manufacturing sector and reflects the country’s broader economic diversification strategy aimed at reducing foreign exchange pressures and building sustainable local industries.
