Ethiopia to Host COP32 Climate Summit in 2027

Ethiopia has been officially selected to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027, marking the first time the global summit will be held in the Horn of Africa, the government announced on Friday.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the decision represents “a major milestone for Africa’s voice in the global climate agenda” and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to driving climate resilience and sustainable development. “Ethiopia stands ready to welcome the world to Addis Ababa for a decisive dialogue on climate action that reflects Africa’s realities and ambitions,” he said in a statement.

As reported by Reuters and Bloomberg, Ethiopia’s bid received strong backing from the African Union and several regional blocs, highlighting its leadership in renewable energy and reforestation initiatives under the Green Legacy Program. The nation has planted more than 32 billion trees since 2019 as part of its environmental restoration efforts.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) confirmed the selection following extensive consultations among member states. Preparations for the event are expected to include major infrastructure upgrades in Addis Ababa, with support from international partners.
