Mali Secures First U.S. Mining Investment as Historic Morila Gold Mine Restarts

Mali has attracted its first United States mining investment under its revised mining code, marking a significant step in reviving confidence in the country’s resource sector. Flagship Gold Corp, a New York-based mining company, has signed an agreement with the Malian state mining company to restart production at the historic Morila gold mine in southern Mali. The mine was previously operated by Australia’s Firefinch Ltd, which exited in 2022 due to declining output and rising costs, as reported by Energy News Online.

The Morila gold mine, located near Sanso in the Sikasso region, contains an estimated 2.5 million ounces of gold and remains one of Mali’s most promising deposits. The government stated that reopening the mine will stimulate regional economic activity and increase revenue from the mining sector. Industry analysts have described the deal as a key test of Mali’s ability to attract Western investors following the introduction of its state-centric mining framework in 2023, as highlighted by Mining Weekly.

Mali’s new mining code grants the government up to 30 percent ownership in new projects while limiting certain tax incentives. Mines Minister Amadou Keita said the Flagship Gold agreement “ensures mutual benefit and sustainable value creation for the country and its partners,” emphasizing that Mali seeks to balance state participation with investor confidence. Reports from Energy News Online noted that this is part of a broader effort to capture more value from Mali’s vast natural resources.

Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the project’s long-term impact. The Morila restart is expected to create jobs, restore Mali’s gold output, and boost investor sentiment. However, experts warn that challenges persist, including rehabilitating aging infrastructure, managing security risks in the region, and maintaining a stable regulatory environment to ensure the success of the renewed mining venture, according to Reuters.
