Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa: Championing Leadership in South Africa’s Corporate Landscape

Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa has carved a name for herself as one of South Africa’s most prominent business leaders, breaking barriers and inspiring countless individuals.

In July 2019, she made history by becoming the first Black African to lead Naspers South Africa, a global media and technology powerhouse.

Born and raised in Meadowlands, Soweto, Phuthi’s upbringing was shaped by both opportunity and tragedy. Losing her mother at just 17 years old, she faced immense personal challenges but demonstrated extraordinary determination.

She pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Rutgers University.

Later, she added an MBA from De Montfort University in the UK to her impressive resume and completed the “Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century” program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in 2008.

These academic pursuits laid the foundation for her groundbreaking career.

Phuthi’s professional journey is characterized by her ability to lead with foresight and impact.

She co-founded Sigma Capital, an investment holding company, where she served as Executive Chairperson. Her tenure at Sigma demonstrated her capacity for strategic growth and innovation.

Her historic appointment as CEO of Naspers South Africa in 2019 further solidified her position as a trailblazer.

Under her leadership, she oversees the company’s extensive operations and growth in South Africa, ensuring its relevance in a rapidly evolving global market.

Phuthi’s leadership reflects her ability to navigate complex corporate landscapes while prioritizing inclusivity and innovation.

Beyond her corporate success, Phuthi is deeply dedicated to social and economic empowerment.

She serves on the board of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, which promotes development initiatives across South Africa.

Her work with the Kagiso Shanduka Trust further underscores her passion for uplifting communities through education and economic development.
