Aya Chebbi: A New Model of Leadership in Global Diplomacy

Aya Chebbi represents a transformative shift in contemporary diplomacy and leadership. With a career rooted in advocacy, policy innovation, and youth engagement, she has become a compelling figure in international affairs, bridging the gap between grassroots mobilization and institutional influence.

Born in 1988 in the town of Dahmani, Tunisia, Chebbi first gained international attention during the 2011 Tunisian Revolution. As a young activist and blogger, her platform “Proudly Tunisian” became a widely followed chronicle of the revolution, offering a deeply personal yet politically incisive account of unfolding events. Her voice captured the mood of a generation demanding reform, accountability, and participation.

Chebbi’s formal education includes a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Tunis El Manar University and a Master’s degree in African Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

But her impact has extended far beyond the academic sphere. Over the past decade, she has built a multi-dimensional career that combines diplomacy, civil society leadership, and public engagement on an international scale.

In 2013, she co-founded the Voice of Women Initiative (VOW-I), a platform designed to amplify underrepresented voices through digital storytelling, advocacy, and leadership development. Her work focused on connecting community-level concerns with policymaking, with a strong emphasis on inclusion and dialogue.

Her appointment in 2018 as the first-ever Special Envoy on Youth to the African Union Commission marked a historic moment, not only was she the youngest diplomat in the AU’s history, but she also brought a fresh, participatory approach to high-level engagement.

During her tenure, she championed strategic frameworks that advanced youth leadership, peacebuilding, and civic participation.

One of her key contributions was expanding the visibility and influence of youth-led initiatives in formal governance spaces, particularly through her work on the continental “Silencing the Guns” campaign.

Chebbi’s leadership style is defined by collaboration, clarity, and vision. She has addressed global forums, consulted with heads of state, and contributed to international panels focused on governance, human rights, and sustainable development. Her approach consistently emphasizes the importance of shared responsibility between generations, institutions, and citizens.

In addition to her diplomatic work, she has established herself as an entrepreneur and educator. Through her platform Chebbi House, she delivers leadership coaching, cultural programs, and advisory services that reflect her commitment to lifelong learning and values-based leadership. She also hosts the podcast I AM NALA, where she curates conversations that explore identity, influence, and public leadership in modern society.

Chebbi’s contributions have earned her widespread recognition, including international awards and appointments to prominent advisory boards and commissions.

Yet what sets her apart is not only her resume, but the consistency of her purpose: to create space for emerging voices and to build more accountable and responsive systems.

Her work continues to resonate globally as an example of how diplomacy can be reimagined to serve not just the powerful, but the participatory. In an era where institutions face increasing scrutiny and social trust is in flux, leaders like Aya Chebbi offer a blueprint for relevance, credibility, and impact.
