Mai Atafo: Nigeria’s Master Couturier of Modern African Luxury

In the dazzling world of African fashion, few names command the respect and admiration that Mai Atafo does. Known for his impeccable tailoring, sophisticated designs, and ability to blend African aesthetics with global couture sensibilities, Atafo has positioned himself as one of Nigeria’s foremost luxury fashion icons. His brand, MAI ATAFO, has become synonymous with elegance, craftsmanship, and an enduring sense of class, qualities that have won him a loyal clientele across Africa and beyond.

From Corporate Boardrooms to Fashion Runways

Born Ohimai Atafo in Nigeria, he pursued a career in the corporate sector before turning his passion for design into a full-time vocation. A graduate of Savile Row Academy in Leeds, UK, where he trained in bespoke tailoring, Atafo returned to Nigeria with a mission: to redefine African luxury fashion through precision, sophistication, and authenticity, according to  Nairametrics.

Before fully establishing his fashion house, Atafo had successful stints in corporate communications and marketing with companies such as Guinness Nigeria and British American Tobacco. But the call of fashion was undeniable, and in 2007, he launched his eponymous label, Mai Atafo Inspired, later rebranded simply as Mai Atafo.

Weddings by Mai

Atafo’s true breakthrough came in 2011, when he launched “Weddings by Mai”, a bridal line that revolutionized the Nigerian wedding fashion scene. His bespoke wedding dresses and sharply tailored suits became the standard for luxury ceremonies, making him the go-to designer for Nigeria’s elite weddings. Celebrities, musicians, and business leaders sought his creations for their big days, cementing his reputation as the country’s king of bridal couture.

The Brand of Elegance

The Mai Atafo brand is built on timeless elegance. From sharply tailored menswear inspired by the precision of Savile Row to intricately designed bridal gowns, Atafo has crafted a signature style that exudes class. His work has been showcased at major fashion events, including Lagos Fashion and Design Week, and he has dressed a roster of African A-list celebrities, from Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde to Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

What sets Atafo apart is not just his craftsmanship but his storytelling through design. He has managed to position fashion as more than fabric, it is identity, confidence, and cultural pride.

Recognition and Legacy

Over the years, Mai Atafo has won multiple awards, including Designer of the Year titles at Nigerian fashion events and recognition across Africa for his contribution to elevating the continent’s fashion industry. His work continues to inspire younger designers, and he is often credited with showing that African designers can compete with the best in the world while staying rooted in their heritage.

A True Icon of African Luxury

Today, Mai Atafo is more than a fashion designer, he is a cultural icon. Through his brand, he has bridged the gap between African traditions and global luxury standards. His legacy lies not only in the gowns and suits he creates but also in the message he embodies: that African luxury is here to stay, and it is as refined, authentic, and globally relevant as any other.
