Mauritius Prime Minister Dismisses Central Bank Deputy Amid Leadership Rifts

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has dismissed Gerard Sanspeur, the second deputy governor of the Bank of Mauritius, following reports of a prolonged conflict with central bank governor Rama Sithanen, L’Express reported.

The leadership dispute was described by Ramgoolam as “unacceptable,” with the prime minister stressing the need to restore stability within the central bank, as highlighted by Reuters.

Sanspeur is expected to hold a press conference later on Friday to address the decision and provide his perspective on the events leading to his removal. Neither the prime minister’s office nor the central bank has commented on the matter, Reuters added.

The dismissal comes at a sensitive time for Mauritius’s financial sector, as the central bank navigates inflationary pressures and maintains investor confidence in its policy direction, media reports indicated.
