Nigeria and Brazil to Formalize Over 30 Cooperation Agreements During High-Level Visit

Nigeria is set to deepen its bilateral ties with Brazil through the signing of more than 30 memorandums of understanding during a strategic visit by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. The agreements are expected to cover a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, energy, defence, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, and cultural exchange.

The initiative is part of a broader framework to revitalise the Nigeria–Brazil strategic dialogue mechanism. A major feature of this collaboration is the Green Imperative Project, a multi-billion dollar agricultural programme aimed at modernising Nigeria’s farming sector. The project, currently in its second phase, is designed to enhance food security, mechanised agriculture, and sustainable rural development through technology transfer and public-private partnerships.

The visit includes formal engagements between Brazilian officials and Nigerian ministers in areas such as agriculture, health, defence, and culture. These interactions are expected to yield cooperation agreements focused on expanding local production capacity in pharmaceuticals, boosting livestock and agro-technology, and supporting cultural and creative industries.

In addition to reinforcing bilateral trade and investment flows, the agreements seek to position Nigeria as a preferred destination for South-South cooperation. The two countries are also exploring opportunities within broader multilateral frameworks, including the BRICS and G20 platforms, to further enhance collaboration.

The engagements are expected to unlock private sector investment, promote industrialisation, and accelerate Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda by leveraging Brazil’s technological expertise and financing models.
