Elena Rybakina has secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis for the first time in her career after defeating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The victory confirmed her position at the top of the WTA rankings for the remainder of the 2026 season, placing her beyond the reach of second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka. According to the Women’s Tennis Association and ChannelsTv reports, Rybakina becomes the 17th player in history to finish a season as the world’s top-ranked woman and the first player representing Kazakhstan to achieve the distinction.
The 27-year-old’s historic achievement crowns an outstanding season highlighted by victories at the Australian Open and US Open, taking her Grand Slam singles titles to three. She also claimed titles at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and the Ningbo Open in China, recording four tournament victories in 2026, more than any other player on the WTA Tour. Her consistency across the season, including reaching six finals and surpassing 50 match wins, has established her as one of the defining players of the year. Rybakina described the year-end ranking as an amazing achievement, crediting the work and support of her team.
Rybakina’s Tokyo campaign, however, ended prematurely after she withdrew from the quarter-finals against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez on Friday, October 30, citing a neck injury. The withdrawal came a day after she had secured the year-end ranking, with the Kazakh player appearing on court to address spectators and thank them for their support. She is expected to turn her attention to the WTA Finals, scheduled to begin in Indian Wells on November 8, where she will seek to close out her historic season on a high.
