Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actor Francis Duru at 57

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family announced on Friday, 23 October 2026. The announcement, shared on the actor’s official Instagram page, expressed gratitude to fans and well-wishers for their prayers and support, although the family did not disclose the specific cause of death or announce funeral arrangements. The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, also confirmed the news, paying tribute to Duru as a great thespian. According to Premium Times, the announcement comes months after the actor publicly dismissed social media reports claiming he was critically ill, describing the circulated footage about his health as misleading.

Born in Cameroon on 27 July 1969 to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru built a career spanning more than three decades in film and television. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996, and began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he portrayed Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed film produced by the late Amaka Igwe. The role established him as a recognisable figure in Nigerian cinema, leading to appearances in productions including Blood Money, Stigma, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons and Mboputa. Beyond acting, Duru worked as a producer, director and voice-over artist, reflecting the breadth of his contribution to Nollywood.

Duru’s contribution to the industry extended to professional leadership and recognition. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007. In 2020, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. His passing also comes two years after the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024, a personal tragedy the actor had publicly mourned. As tributes emerge from colleagues and audiences, Duru leaves behind a body of work that connected generations of Nollywood viewers and secured his place among the familiar faces of Nigerian screen entertainment.
