IShowSpeed Makes Film Production Debut Alongside Barack and Michelle Obama in The Eyes of Ghana

American internet personality IShowSpeed has made his debut as a film producer, joining former United States President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama on The Eyes of Ghana, a documentary celebrating a pivotal chapter in African history. According to MyJoyOnline, the streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, joined the production after visiting Ghana earlier in 2026 and developing a deeper connection with the country’s history and heritage. The project is backed by Higher Ground, the production company founded by the Obamas, in partnership with Breakwater Studios. Directed by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, the documentary previously premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and is preparing for a special one-night cinema release across the United States and Canada on October 28, 2026.

At the heart of The Eyes of Ghana is veteran Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse, who served as the personal cameraman to Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. The documentary follows Hesse as he races against deteriorating eyesight to preserve more than 1,000 reels of historical footage capturing Ghana’s independence in 1957 and the wider African liberation movements of the 1950s and 1960s. According to MyJoyOnline, the archive remained hidden for decades following the 1966 military coup that overthrew Nkrumah, with Hesse protecting the material and working to ensure its survival for future generations. IShowSpeed said his experience in Ghana strengthened his appreciation of the country and motivated him to help bring Hesse’s story to a wider audience. His involvement offers the documentary access to a younger, global audience built through his enormous following across livestreaming and social media platforms.

The partnership represents a notable intersection of digital entertainment, international filmmaking and African historical preservation. While IShowSpeed has built his reputation through gaming, livestreams, travel and viral entertainment, his first producing credit places him within a project centred on safeguarding the continent’s cultural memory. The documentary’s upcoming theatrical release is being organised by Breakwater Studios and Higher Ground, with screenings planned through major cinema chains including AMC, Regal and Cinemark. Beyond its entertainment value, the film underscores the importance of preserving African archival records and making them accessible to audiences who may have limited exposure to the continent’s independence-era history. By connecting Hesse’s decades-long work with IShowSpeed’s international reach, The Eyes of Ghana aims to bring a vital part of Ghana’s story to a new generation of viewers.
