African Women Expanding Influence Through Entertainment Technology and Storytelling

African women continue to shape global culture and industry through their creativity, expertise and entrepreneurial vision. From award winning performances and global travel storytelling to technology inclusion, personal development and African entertainment, these five women demonstrate the different ways talent and purpose can translate into lasting influence.

Ayo Edebiri – Actress and Comedian

Ayo Edebiri has become one of the most compelling talents in contemporary American entertainment, earning international recognition as an actress, comedian, writer and director. Born in Boston to a Nigerian father and a Barbadian mother, she has built a multifaceted career across television, film, stand up comedy and voice acting. Her breakthrough came through her portrayal of Sydney Adamu, an ambitious chef in the critically acclaimed series The Bear, a performance that established her as one of the industry’s most exciting young actors.

Edebiri’s performance earned her the 2023 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, followed by the 2024 Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards for her work on the series. She has also expanded her creative contribution behind the camera, making her directing debut on The Bear and earning recognition for her writing. Her screen credits include Bottoms, Theater Camp, Inside Out 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In 2025, she appeared in After the Hunt and Ella McCay, further demonstrating her range across different genres. Through her work, Edebiri continues to bring a distinctive creative voice to global entertainment while representing a generation of performers who move confidently between comedy, drama and filmmaking.

Jessica Nabongo – Travel blogger and Author

Jessica Nabongo is a Ugandan American travel storyteller, author, photographer and entrepreneur whose work has transformed how audiences experience the world through travel. She became internationally recognised after completing her journey to all 195 countries, documenting her experiences and encounters with people, cultures and communities along the way. Born and raised in Detroit to Ugandan parents, Nabongo combines her personal heritage with a global outlook, using travel as a means of encouraging cultural understanding and challenging narrow perceptions of unfamiliar places.

Her travel experiences became the foundation for The Catch Me If You Can: One Woman’s Journey to Every Country in the World, published by National Geographic. The book blends personal stories, cultural observations and practical travel insights, extending her influence beyond social media. She is also the founder of The Catch, a lifestyle brand, and has been recognised by Travel + Leisure among its 50 Most Notable People in Travel. Nabongo’s work goes beyond destination photography, placing emphasis on human connection, local experiences and the stories that often remain overlooked in mainstream travel coverage. Her journey has established her as a prominent voice in global travel storytelling and an advocate for approaching the world with greater curiosity and openness.

Damilola Adegbite – Actress, Author and founder of RESET

Damilola Adegbite has built a career in Nigerian entertainment that spans acting, writing, entrepreneurship and personal development. She first gained widespread recognition for playing Telema Duke in the television series Tinsel, before expanding her screen presence with roles in productions including Flower Girl. Her performance in Ayo and other film projects helped establish her as a familiar face in Nollywood, while her work across television and cinema has demonstrated her versatility as a performer.

Beyond acting, Adegbite has explored themes of emotional wellbeing, self awareness and personal transformation through her writing and public engagements. She is the author of The Reset, a book centred on reflection, personal growth and the process of making intentional changes in one’s life. Through her RESET initiative, she has sought to encourage conversations around taking stock of one’s experiences, reconsidering limiting patterns and approaching life with renewed clarity. Her journey reflects an evolving understanding of celebrity influence, one that extends beyond screen performances into the conversations people have about growth, wellbeing and the possibility of starting again.
