Trump Signals Major Oil and Mineral Exploration in Greenland Amid US Strategic Push

US President Donald Trump has announced plans for what he described as “massive” oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland, intensifying international attention on the Arctic island’s largely untapped natural resources and strategic importance. In a post on his Truth Social platform on October 14, Trump claimed that Greenland could hold exceptionally large quantities of easily accessible oil, but provided no evidence, company names or details about the proposed exploration programme. According to Reuters, the announcement follows a security agreement signed by the United States, Denmark and Greenland in September, aimed at easing diplomatic tensions after Trump repeatedly expressed interest in bringing the self-governing Danish territory under US control. The agreement expands American military access to the island while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Greenland’s resource potential extends beyond oil and natural gas to rare earth elements and other critical minerals used in electric vehicles, smartphones, renewable energy infrastructure and defence technologies. These deposits have attracted growing international interest as governments seek to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on China, which dominates much of the global rare earth processing industry. However, the commercial prospects remain uncertain. The Associated Press reported that Greenland’s harsh Arctic climate, limited infrastructure, challenging geology and high extraction costs have historically hindered large-scale resource development. Although geological assessments indicate substantial potential reserves, no commercial oil production has been established on the island. Trump’s announcement did not clarify whether the proposed exploration would involve US companies, Greenlandic authorities or existing mineral and energy projects.

The announcement also highlights the growing overlap between natural resource competition and Arctic security. Greenland’s location between North America and Europe makes it strategically important for missile warning systems, military surveillance and emerging Arctic shipping routes as polar ice continues to retreat. Under the September security agreement, Washington can establish additional military bases at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Mestersvig in the east, alongside its existing Pituffik Space Base in the northwest. However, the agreement does not itself grant the United States automatic exploration rights, and any commercial development will depend on the applicable legal, regulatory and environmental requirements. For Greenland, the prospect of mineral and energy investment presents potential opportunities for economic development, but also raises questions about environmental protection, local decision-making and how the island’s population would benefit from any future resource revenues.
