Mo Abudu Opens EbonyLife Place London to Champion African Cinema and Black Creativity

Nigerian media entrepreneur and filmmaker Mo Abudu has officially opened EbonyLife Place London, a new cinema and cultural destination designed to bring African and Black storytelling to wider international audiences. The venue was inaugurated on October 8, 2026, in south London, at an event attended by London Mayor Sadiq Khan. According to Screen Daily and Channels Television, the facility features a 160-seat cinema known as the Amani Auditorium, billed as the United Kingdom’s only cinema dedicated exclusively to African and Black films. The opening represents a major expansion of Abudu’s EbonyLife brand beyond Nigeria, where the original EbonyLife Place launched in Lagos in 2019. Speaking about the project, Abudu said the aim was to create more opportunities for audiences to experience African creativity, adding that the venue would provide a platform for stories from Lagos, London, Accra, Kingston, New York and other parts of the global Black diaspora.

Beyond cinema, EbonyLife Place London has been developed as a broader cultural and lifestyle hub, bringing together film, hospitality, fashion, art and live entertainment under one roof. According to Voice of Nigeria, the multi-storey destination includes a Nigerian restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a retail boutique featuring African and diaspora designers, and curated artworks celebrating Black creativity. Its year-round programme is expected to feature Nollywood productions alongside films from across Africa, the Caribbean, the United States and the wider diaspora. The venue will also host industry discussions, masterclasses, premieres, performances and other creative events intended to connect filmmakers with audiences and industry professionals. Mayor Sadiq Khan welcomed the opening, describing it as an addition to London’s cultural offering and recognising the importance of providing greater visibility for African and Black filmmakers. The launch also coincides with the BFI London Film Festival and Black History Month, placing the new venue within a broader period of celebration for film and cultural diversity.

For EbonyLife Media, the London expansion creates a new platform for African storytelling, creative partnerships and commercial opportunities in one of the world’s most influential entertainment markets. By combining film exhibition with dining, retail and cultural programming, the company is extending its business model beyond content production and distribution into physical experiences that can build stronger relationships between creators and audiences. The Punch reported that Abudu sees the venue as a response to the limited number of dedicated spaces for Black and African cinema in the United Kingdom. The project was financed almost entirely by EbonyLife Media, demonstrating the company’s commitment to developing its own infrastructure for African cultural representation. Its long-term impact will depend on audience participation, programming diversity and the strength of partnerships with filmmakers, distributors, brands and cultural institutions. Nevertheless, EbonyLife Place London marks a significant step in the international expansion of a Nigerian media brand, positioning African film, fashion, food and art within a permanent destination in the British capital.
