Yaya Touré Makes African Coaching History With Slovan Bratislava

Ivorian football legend Yaya Touré has made history by becoming the first African head coach to lead a club into the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, achieving the milestone with Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava in his first senior managerial appointment, as reported by AlJazeera. Slovan secured its place after defeating Slovenian side NK Celje 2 to 1 after extra time in the second leg of their qualifying playoff, completing a 3 to 2 aggregate victory.

Touré took charge of Slovan Bratislava in July on a three year contract and has made an immediate impact. His side progressed through a demanding qualifying campaign, remaining unbeaten while also making a strong start to the Slovak league season. The decisive Champions League victory came through Cristian Martínez’s 100th minute goal after the tie remained level following 90 minutes.

The achievement adds another landmark to Touré’s extraordinary football career. As a player, the former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009, three Premier League titles with Manchester City and the Africa Cup of Nations with Côte d’Ivoire in 2015. He also won the African Player of the Year award four times.

Touré’s breakthrough also builds on the path established by Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo, who in 2020 became the first African coach to lead a club through Champions League qualification with Albania’s KF Tirana. However, Touré has now gone a step further by guiding Slovan Bratislava into the competition’s league phase, placing an African coach directly among Europe’s elite and opening a significant new chapter in his transition from celebrated player to top level manager.
