The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The announcement was made by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, according to ChannelsTv and Vanguard.
The declaration gives workers across Nigeria a midweek break and extends the government’s traditional recognition of the Islamic occasion as a national public holiday. The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora and encouraged Nigerians to reflect on values associated with the Prophet’s life, particularly compassion, humility, service and peaceful coexistence.
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, national unity and stability, while calling for restraint and mutual respect during the celebrations. The government said protecting lives and property and sustaining peaceful coexistence remain national priorities.
For businesses and workers, the Tuesday holiday will create a brief pause in the working week, while religious communities are expected to mark the occasion through prayers, gatherings and reflection. Eid ul Mawlid falls on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Nigeria.
