US Moves to Pay $725 Million of UN Arrears as Funding Crisis Deepens

The United States is preparing to transfer $725 million to the United Nations, marking a significant step toward addressing billions of dollars in outstanding contributions owed to the global body, as reported by Reuters. The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intention to make the payment, which would represent less than 20% of the more than $4 billion the UN said in May was owed by Washington. The planned allocation was outlined in an August 4 State Department notification to Congress and has not yet been transferred.

The payment comes as the UN faces a severe liquidity crisis linked to delayed and unpaid contributions from member states. Secretary General António Guterres has warned of the risk of financial collapse, while the organisation has implemented major budget reductions and operational changes. The United States remains the UN’s largest contributor, despite the Trump administration having significantly reduced funding to several UN agencies and pushed for reforms, cost reductions and changes to the organisation’s operations.

For the UN, the proposed payment could provide short term relief for salaries and essential operations, although experts caution that it will not resolve the broader funding gap. The US payment is also significant because countries that fall sufficiently behind on assessed contributions risk losing their voting rights under Article 19 of the UN Charter.

The development highlights the growing financial pressure on multilateral institutions and the economic consequences of delayed government contributions. While the $725 million would provide immediate liquidity, the wider issue remains whether Washington will make further payments and whether the UN can secure more predictable financing as it pursues its reform agenda. The US has indicated that future payments will be linked to continued reforms within the organisation.
