DC Studios’ Lanterns has delivered a major opening for HBO Max, attracting 9.3 million global viewers across HBO and HBO Max during its first three days of availability, according to Variety. The figure makes the series the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show on HBO Max to date and places it among the platform’s top five series launches.
The premiere drew 6.6 million viewers in the United States, giving the new Green Lantern series a particularly strong domestic start. The show stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, with the pair investigating a mysterious murder in rural America while confronting a larger cosmic threat.
The performance puts Lanterns ahead of several recent HBO Max launches and gives DC Studios an early commercial win for its expanding television universe. The series was developed by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with an eight episode first season airing weekly on HBO and HBO Max.
The strong debut could strengthen Warner Bros. Discovery’s confidence in building HBO and HBO Max around major DC properties, particularly as the company looks to create a more interconnected and commercially powerful DC Universe. For Lanterns, the challenge now is sustaining its audience through the remainder of the season and converting its strong launch into long term franchise momentum.
