Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially become the highest grossing R rated movie of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine at the global box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. The epic has earned approximately $1.35 billion worldwide, compared with the $1.338 billion generated by the 2024 Marvel blockbuster.

Starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey has also become Nolan’s biggest box office success, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer. The film has earned about $516 million in North America and $835 million internationally, with its theatrical run still continuing.
The milestone is another major commercial achievement for Nolan, whose decision to shoot the film entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras helped create a premium theatrical experience and encouraged audiences to see the film on the big screen. The film’s global performance also makes it the second highest grossing movie of 2026 so far, behind Spider Man: Brand New Day.
Ryan Reynolds, whose Deadpool & Wolverine previously held the record, congratulated Nolan and the cast and crew, joking about the film’s title and the Honda Odyssey featured in his own movie. The result further demonstrates the commercial power of R rated cinema when major filmmakers combine large scale spectacle with premium theatrical formats.
