Mali’s Gold Output Rebounds as First Half Production Beats Government Forecast

Mali’s industrial gold production rose by about 30% in the first half of 2026 to 23.5 metric tonnes, exceeding the government’s forecast of 21.2 tonnes and signalling a stronger recovery for one of Africa’s leading gold producers, Reuters reported. The rebound follows a difficult 2025, when disputes between the government and mining companies disrupted operations and contributed to weaker production.

The increase has been supported by the resumption and ramp up of operations at major mines, including Barrick’s Loulo Gounkoto complex, which returned to normal operations after the company regained control in December 2025. Barrick reported a sharp increase in first quarter production as mining and processing activities recovered.

The stronger output comes as Mali continues to tighten its control over the mining industry and seek a larger share of mineral revenues under its revised mining framework. The government had previously forecast full year industrial production of 43.2 tonnes for 2026, although the first half performance suggests the sector is currently running ahead of that pace.

For Mali, the recovery is economically significant because gold remains a major source of export earnings and government revenue. Sustained production growth could strengthen public finances and attract renewed investment into the mining sector, although ongoing tensions over taxation, ownership and operating conditions remain important risks for international miners.
