Vodacom Names Khumo Shuenyane as New Chair

South African telecommunications group Vodacom has appointed Khumo Lesego Shuenyane as its next chairman, with the leadership transition scheduled to take effect on July 21, 2027. According to Reuters, Shuenyane will succeed current chairman Saki Macozoma, who will retire from the board after reaching Vodacom’s self imposed 10 year board tenure limit.

Shuenyane currently serves as Vodacom’s lead independent director and brings more than 15 years of experience in the telecommunications sector, including six years as Group Chief Mergers and Acquisitions Officer at MTN Group. He has also held senior positions in investment banking and corporate finance and currently serves as an independent non executive director at Bidvest Group and Ninety One. Vodacom’s official board profile confirms his experience across telecommunications, financial services, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance.

The succession comes as Vodacom pursues its Vision 2030 strategy and expands its connectivity, digital and financial services businesses across Africa. The group reported R167.7 billion in revenue for the financial year ended March 2026, up 10.1%, while EBITDA increased 12.8% to R62.6 billion. For investors, the planned leadership transition provides continuity while bringing an experienced telecommunications and corporate finance executive into the chairmanship.

The board is also undergoing wider changes. Former Airtel Africa CEO Segun Ogunsanya will join Vodacom as an independent non executive director on October 9, 2026, while Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa will retire from the board on October 8. The appointments are expected to strengthen the board’s African telecommunications, technology and business leadership expertise as Vodacom enters its next phase of regional expansion.
