FIFA Abandons World Cup Stake Sale Plan After Global Backlash

FIFA has abandoned its controversial proposal to sell a minority stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup and other major tournaments, marking a significant setback for President Gianni Infantino’s plans to reshape the governing body’s commercial structure. According to Bloomberg, FIFA confirmed it will no longer proceed with the proposal to create FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary that had been valued at $20 billion and was expected to raise about $4.2 billion by selling up to a 20% stake to private investors. The decision followed widespread opposition from football associations and confederations around the world.

The proposal faced strong resistance from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with critics arguing that introducing private equity into the World Cup’s commercial operations would undermine the governance and long term integrity of football. Reuters reported that UEFA even threatened a boycott of FIFA competitions if the plan moved forward, while senior FIFA adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned in protest over the proposal. Infantino acknowledged that although the initiative had supporters, it had created divisions that outweighed its intended benefits, leading FIFA to withdraw the plan.

The reversal represents an important moment in global football governance and underscores the influence of FIFA’s member associations over major commercial decisions. For investors and the sports business industry, the decision preserves FIFA’s existing non profit structure while delaying what could have been one of the largest private equity investments in global sport. It also highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding the commercialisation of premium sporting events and the balance between generating new revenues and protecting institutional independence.

Looking ahead, FIFA is expected to continue funding football development through its existing commercial model rather than external equity investment. While the governing body remains focused on expanding revenues from broadcasting, sponsorship and major tournaments, the collapse of the stake sale proposal signals that future reforms will require broader consultation and stronger consensus among the global football community.
