Energean, Carlyle Among Bidders for BP’s Egypt Gas Assets as Portfolio Sale Advances

Several energy companies and investment firms, including Energean, Carlyle Group, Dragon Oil and Artemis Energy, are preparing bids for BP’s natural gas assets in Egypt’s West Nile Delta, as the British energy major advances plans to streamline its portfolio and reduce debt. According to Reuters, binding offers are expected to be submitted by the end of the week, although the value of the potential transaction has not been disclosed. The sale forms part of BP’s broader strategy to simplify operations while strengthening its balance sheet.

BP remains one of Egypt’s largest energy investors, having invested more than $35 billion in the country over the past six decades. The company currently accounts for about 60% of Egypt’s natural gas production through joint ventures in the East Nile Delta and fields it operates in the West Nile Delta. However, BP’s gas production in Egypt declined to approximately 518 million cubic feet per day last year, reflecting falling output even as the country faces rising domestic energy demand and tighter global gas markets. Earlier this year, BP announced a new gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt and secured additional exploration concessions in the North East El Alamein and West El Hammad blocks.

The potential sale highlights the continued attractiveness of Egypt’s natural gas sector despite production challenges. For businesses and investors, the bidding process reflects growing confidence in the Eastern Mediterranean’s long term energy potential, with both strategic operators and private equity firms seeking exposure to gas assets that can support regional energy security and export opportunities. The transaction also underscores Egypt’s importance as a regional energy hub linking African, Middle Eastern and European gas markets.

Looking ahead, the outcome of the bidding process will be closely watched as BP reshapes its global portfolio while Egypt seeks to boost gas production and attract fresh investment into its upstream sector. A successful transaction could unlock new capital for asset development, strengthen domestic energy supply and reinforce Egypt’s position as one of Africa’s leading natural gas producers.
